Claressa Shields registered a thumping victory over Savannah Marshall, in what turned out to be the most-watched women’s pro fight in boxing history. Shields emerged victorious by a unanimous decision and the 27-year-old boxer was crowned a world champion on Sunday for the third time in her career.
All three judges were in Shields’ favor – 96-94, 97-93, 97-93 – as she claimed the WBA, IBF, WBO, WBC, and Ring Magazine titles on a historic night for women’s boxing. The American produced a fight of a lifetime to avenge her only defeat in pro boxing and stakes her claim as one of the greatest female boxers to have ever taken the ring.
Shields, who hails from Michigan, fought the British star boxer Savannah Marshall in London and is open for a re-match with the same person in the USA. A big fan of Muhammad Ali, Shields also is a two-time Olympic gold medal in Amateur Boxing (the first African-American to do so), making her cabinet one of the most illustrious ones in sporting history.
“I am the greatest woman of all time. The fighter from Flint, Michigan is a trailblazer. I think representation is everything. I think if I had a Claressa Shields to look up to when I was coming up of course I would be a lot better, of course, I would know the game and wouldn’t have to work as hard as I’m working now,” she said.
Both these boxers who fought in London on Sunday also fought in the same city back in 2012 during the London Olympics as amateurs. This made Marshall the only fighter to ever defeat Shields in a boxing ring and in her first meeting with the Britisher in a decade, Shields managed to avenge her age-old defeat.
Claressa Shields displayed a terrific aura of confidence right from her entry to the boxing ring, where she came in dancing alongside the side dancers. The American rose to the occasion despite Marshall putting her under immense pressure from the get-go.
The boxer was totally in awe of the turn-out for this battle and said that women’s boxing will continue to live on with such support. She stressed that it is necessary to build on the hype that is currently existing.
