According to Spanish outlet SPORT, two European heavyweights Barcelona and Liverpool are contemplating a swap deal between two of their forwards. The Catalan giants are actively looking to offload Dutch international Memphis Depay in the winter transfer market after failing to sell him this summer.
Depay has less than a year remaining on his contract with Barcelona and is not an integral part of Xavi’s plans. The Dutchman was signed on a free transfer from Lyon in 2021, and despite beginning things in fine fashion, he hasn’t exactly managed to light up the Camp Nou.
Juventus were heavily interested in signing Depay this summer. Barcelona had even agreed to sell him for a symbolic fee given that they had brought him as a free agent. However, the player and his representatives failed to reach an agreement with the Bianconeri as they turned their attention toward Arkadiusz Milik instead.
With the signing of Depay and in the presence of stars like Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele, and Raphinha in the frontline, Depay has struggled for game time. He has started in just two matches so far this season and has been out of contention in most of the big games.
As such, it isn’t surprising that Barcelona is keen on offloading Depay as soon as possible and freeing up more space on the wage bill. There are even talks suggesting a potential swap deal involving Depay and Roberto Firmino according to sources in the English media.
Much like Depay, Firmino is also struggling for game time at Anfield and his contractual situation with Liverpool is complicated as well. After the additions of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz, Firmino has fallen down the pecking order for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. His contract is also expiring in 2023; therefore, moving away from Merseyside could be on the cards soon.
Barcelona has emerged as a potential destination for the Brazilian forward as both the Catalan giants and Liverpool are in talks over a swap deal that could mutually benefit both parties in this situation.
It will be interesting to see whether the players agree to it if a swap deal is eventually reached between the two clubs given that lucrative offers could be in store for them as free agents when their contracts expire next year.
