Boxer Gervonta Davis arrested on domestic violence charge days before title bout with Hector Luis Garcia
Boxer Gervonta Davis was arrested on Tuesday in Parkland, Florida. He has subsequently been held in a jail on a domestic violence charge of battery causing bodily harm as reported by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office records.
The 28-year-old multiple world champion will remain in custody at Broward County’s Main Jail Bureau in Fort Lauderdale. Davis is scheduled to appear in front of a court hearing to respond to his charges on Wednesday and at 8 AM (eastern time) according to ESPN. As of now, a bond amount has not been set for him.
Davis’ arrest comes days before the American was supposed to take on Hector Luis Garcia on Saturday, January 7 where he was supposed to defend his WBA “Regular” lightweight belt on Showtime PPV Event in Washington DC.
However, the latest incident has cast a major
shadow of doubt on the pay-per-view being held in the first place. The bout had been planned as a prelude to an April 25 superfight in Las Vegas against Ryan Garcia. Davis (with a record of 27-0, including 25 KOs) is a former 130-pound world champion and title holder.
Details regarding Davis’ arrest and the potential causes were not made available to the public until Wednesday morning. Inmate records at the Broward County Jail showed that the Parkland Police arrested him on Tuesday evening and they classified the incident as alleged domestic violence while also publishing his mugshot.
This is far from being the first incident involving Davis’ brush with the law. Unbeaten in his boxing career, the man known as ‘The Tank’ is also set to appear in Baltimore Circuit Court on February 16 for an alleged involvement in a hit and run case that apparently took place in November 2020, as per the court records.
He has been accused of fleeing the scene in an accident that involved four people, including a pregnant woman. As a result, he is facing 14 charges which includes failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury. Davis also has a civil suit lined up against him.
He was previously arrested in February 2020 and was charged with two misdemeanour counts of simple battery domestic violence on the mother of his daughter at a charity basketball game in Miami. The video of that incident had gone viral on social media.
