FA set to investigate suspicious betting patterns during the FA Cup match between Arsenal and Oxford United
The Football Association (FA) in England are looking to investigate what they deem allegations of quite suspicious betting patterns. The supposed incident took place during the third round tie of the FA Cup between Premier League leaders Arsenal and Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Monday night.
During the match, Mikel Arteta’s side faced an extremely underwhelming first half. However, they ended up cruising to victory against the League One outfit over the course of the second half. However, the governing body of English football, the FA has now taken the match under greater spotlight and are investigated supposed corruption and suspicions of betting during the game.
The claims were first reported by Mail Online and it actually concerns the booking of a player in the second half of the contest. Sky Sports News believe that the FA is currently looking at the footage of the match in great detail and is also examining the evidence which has been put forward to it over the course of the week.
It is the booking of Oxford defender Ciaron Brown who was shown a yellow card by the referee in the 59th minute after a foul on Gunners forward Bukayo Saka that has attracted the attention of the FA.
Daily Mail are now claiming that they have evidence to suggest that the occurrence of a potential betting scam may have been the reason behind the on-field incident.
The report states the FA have seen alleged phone messages from before kick-off at the Kassam Stadium which claim Brown would go on to be booked. One of the messages is said to show a betting slip with around £200 staked on the defender receiving a yellow at odds of 8-1.
The report also goes on to add that several Arsenal fans were found celebrating in the stands after he got booked, which suggested that they had won huge sums from potential bets.
An Oxford statement read: “Oxford United can confirm that they have been made aware of a specific allegation of irregular betting around our Emirates FA Cup game against Arsenal on Monday evening.
“The club will co-operate fully with any investigation and while this is ongoing, we are unable to make any further comment.”
