FIFA World Cup 2022: England and USA through to round of 16
England and USA are through to the round of 16 after both sides registered a win in their respective games in Group B. The English tore their neighbors Wales apart in their final group game of the tournament 3-0, whilst the United States had some hard work to do against Iran at the Al Thumama Stadium.
All Iran needed heading into their final group game of the tournament was a draw against the USA to make it through to the round of 16 for the first time in their history. However, they were denied that honor by a spirited performance from the Americans.
Juventus midfielder Winston McKennie found Sergio Dest with an expert long ball. The right-back played it first time into the path of Christian Pulisic, who opened the scoring in this fixture for the USA. Timothy Weah made a sparkling run to connect with a through ball and neatly tucked it past the keeper for a second goal for the USA just before the half-time whistle, but it was chalked off due to an off-side in the buildup.
Iran made some desperate attempts to get on the scoresheet in the second half and threw the kitchen sink at it. Pouraligangi very nearly nicked an equalizer in stoppage time, but his header from close range was well off the target. The Americans persevered and finished second in the group with two draws and a win.
England and Wales’ first meeting at the FIFA World Cup got off to a very toe-to-toe start in the first half, with neither side separating each other. For Wales, Neco Williams had picked up an unfortunate injury due to which Connor Roberts had come into the picture.
Although the 1966 winners of the tournament were not finding it easy, Marcus Rashford provided them a get-out-of-jail moment with a stunning freekick. He smashed it expertly from 30 yards to the left of the keeper to establish a 1-0 England lead. Just a minute later, Phil Foden was in the act as both halves of Manchester had a representation on the scoresheet on Tuesday.
Rashford worked his way through the right flank to score from a tight angle in the 68th minute, where he nutmegged Danny Ward to score his second goal of the day and third of the tournament. England completed a terrific 3-0 win, taking their goal tally in the FIFA World Cup 2020 to nine thus far.
