Floyd Mayweather is plotting a return to the ring with Conor McGregor in 2023
Retired with an undefeated record, boxing mega-star Floyd Mayweather is looking to return to the ring to take on UFC star Conor McGregor in what is expected to be a star-studded affair of an exhibition bout in 2023.
Retired with an undefeated record, boxing mega-star Floyd Mayweather is looking to return to the ring to take on UFC star Conor McGregor in what is expected to be a star-studded affair of an exhibition bout in 2023.
The two squared off against each other in the ring in 2017. On that occasion, Mayweather returned from retirement to stop McGregor in the 10th round after dominating him throughout the bout and the $300 million payday was the final fight of his professional career at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
Since then, the 45-year-old has actually competed in several exhibitions even after retiring and Mayweather fancies the idea of fighting McGregor again and he has been holding talks regarding the same.
“We don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition or a real fight,” the undefeated boxer told the Daily Mail. “I would prefer an exhibition.”
However, just a few hours later, the Irish MMA champion seemed to brush off the idea by posting a picture on Instagram from their previous fight with the caption “#notinterested”.
Despite this, Mayweather even went on to suggest that the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, home to NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders could end up being a potential venue if the rematch between him and McGregor does take place at some point in time.
Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, as he’s also known, after generating the highest revenue (over $1 billion throughout his career) for a professional boxer in history also shed light on the money that might be at stake for this potential rematch.
“They already talked to me about my number that I’m going to receive,” Floyd told TMZ, adding, “9 figures.”
“You know we gotta start at least 100 million for Floyd Mayweather,” he added.
Mayweather is set to take on MMA star Mikuru Asakura in another exhibition fight which will be held in Japan this weekend. The 45-year-old who has been retired from boxing with an undefeated 50-0 record has featured in several high-profile exhibition bouts.
He faced YouTube star Logan Paul last year at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida and the match ended undecided even though Mayweather clearly held back given the lack of stakes involved in the match.
McGregor, meanwhile, returned to the UFC after the loss against Mayweather, but he has struggled to rediscover the form that led to him becoming the UFC’s first double champion. The Irishman has lost three of his last four UFC fights and is currently recovering from a broken leg he sustained in his loss to Dustin Poirier a year ago.
