Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition bout with Deji ends after six rounds
Legendary boxing champion Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition match with YouTube star Deji ends by stoppage inside six rounds. How Mayweather, one of the greatest athletes to get in a boxing ring found himself in a bout with a YouTube personality is a different question altogether.
While the answer to that question may be too expansive and already widely covered, what was abundantly clear is the fact that they did not belong in the same ring together. Despite youth and athleticism on his side, Deji Olatunji failed to contain ‘Money’ Mayweather even in an exhibition contest as the latter stopped him inside six rounds on Monday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
It was a curious evening in Dubai that had seen Youtube superstar and licensed boxer Jake Paul to come in to commentate from ringside on Tommy Fury, Tyson Fury’s brother who was on the show’s undercard. Fury was also in the exhibition, with Roland Lambert coming in on the day when Fury’s original bout with Paul Bamba fell through after they weighed in.
The bout between Mayweather and Deji also took a long time to begin as reports emerged that there was an ongoing dispute even at a late stage regarding the size of the gloves that will be used as well as the number of rounds in the exhibition.
Mayweather began affairs playfully, only casually throwing punches at Oltaunji’s body in the first couple of rounds. He slowly began to up the intensity and started delivering shots with a bit more power from the onset of Round 3. He started playing to the crowd and he put Deji under an intense amount of pressure referee Kenny Bayless stepped in to save him from any further punishment.
The exhibition bout scheduled for eight two-minute rounds was halted inside six and it will not affect Mayweather’s professionally undefeated record of 50-0.
The event was Mayweather’s fifth exhibition since he retired from professional boxing with a victory over Conor McGregor in 2017. He finished with some kind words for Deji, “I’m proud of you, keep up the great work.”
“I want anyone to go after their dreams, go after what they believe in, continue to work hard, and continue to build. I didn’t get to where I got to overnight. It took a lot of time, it took a great team. I didn’t do it by myself.”
