Former UFC star Sage Northcutt set for MMA return after a gap of four years

25 January, 2023

Sage Northcutt is all set to return to the MMA for the first time since 2019. The former UFC star has been away from the ring since May 2019, where he suffered a brutal knockout defeat at the hands of Cosmo Alexandre on his ONE Championship debut.

However, making his comeback after a lenghty period away from the cage, Northcutt who holds an 11-3 MMA record, has been booked for a welterweight bout against Ahmed Mujtaba, with a 10-2 MMA record, at ONE Championship Fight Night 10 in the month of May.

Following an initial report on the same by Sports Illustrated, officials from the promotion confirmed the fight and announced the matchup on Monday.

ONE Fight Night 10 will be the debut for the promotion on American soil.

The card is expected to take place on May 5 and will be held at the STBANK Center in Broomfield, near Denver in Colorado and will be streamed live on Amazon Prime Video. The main event of the card features bantamweight champion Demetrious Johnson putting his title on the line in a trilogy rematch with Adriano Moraes.

Coming back to Northcutt, there was a point in time when he was considered the biggest and hottest prospect in the world of mixed martial arts. Signed to the UFC at the age of just 19, he definitely looked the part and was deemed as a cash cow for future PPV programs for the world’s biggest MMA promotion.

However, he failed to live up to its potential. Whether it was because he was pushed too fast and hard or because he had some glaring flaws in his wrestling style or just because UFC didn’t want to give in to his demands, they part ways on ‘amicable terms’ in 2018. ‘Super’ Sage, as he was called, had a strong 6-2 record inside the octagon over his three year tenure with UFC.

Northcutt then decided to sign with ONE Championship in a high-profile move that attracted a lot of media attention. However, things quickly went downhill for him. Fighting Cosmo Alexandre in Singapore, he was knocked cold with one punch inside the first 30 seconds and has been away from the ring ever since.

Although Northcutt had previously stated that he would be returning back down to 155 lbs following his loss to Alexandre, his bout against Mujtaba has been booked at 170 lbs.
