India to host 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships
TThe IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 is all set to take place from March 15 to 31 in New Delhi. India gears up to host the biennial event for the third time in the tournament’s history having previously done it in 2006 and 2017 since the inception of the Championship in 2001. India also hosted Women’s Youth World Championship in Guwahati back in 2017.
“The countdown to one of the world’s biggest boxing events of 2023 begins now. The World Championships are a testament to Indian boxing’s unparalleled credentials and we, at the Boxing Federation of India, are geared up to deliver a spectacular experience,” said Ajay Singh, President of Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
The competition will take place in 12 weight categories– 48 kg, 50 kg, 52 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 63 kg, 66 kg, 70 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg and +81 kg–and the registration will open soon. The BFI and IBA are also planning to work towards introducing a historic bout review system at the championships.
Indian women have had a magnificent outing in the IBAW World Boxing Champions. They have clinched 39 medals, including 10 golds, in the 12 editions of the championship so far. When the country hosted the tournament last time in 2018 in New Delhi, 277 boxers from 62 countries participated and Indians claimed four medals.
India’s record is the fourth best in the tournament and are one of the four team to have won Gold Medals in double digits. Russia and China are the only countries to have won over 50 medals in this competition, with Russia bagging 24 golds and China taking home 18. A total of 54 countries have picked up a medal in this competition thus far.
Indian legend Mary Kom is the most successful female boxer of all time in the World Championships, having bagged a whopping six gold medals thus far. The former Olympic bronze medalist has won six golds, one silver and one bronze medal in her illustrious career, taking the overall tally to eight.
Irish boxer Katie Taylor is a close second with five gold medals and one bronze medal. Kom and Taylor are the only female boxers with five or more gold medals in this event.
