Jamie Redknapp believes Martin Odegaard is Premier League’s best midfielder

14 March, 2023

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp is renowned for some hot takes during his punditry career. He often speaks out his mind without much thought and sometimes, his opinions cause quite a debate on social media, based on whether or not he is making sense. He is back again with some comments that are raging people up across different platforms.

Redknapp is a big fan of Arsenal midfielder and captain Martin Odegaard, who has been sensational in this title-challenging season for the Gunners. However, what has been remarkably satisfying to watch for a lot of fans is the fact that he was written off at one point and now is turning out to be the central piece to Mikel Arteta’s future.

Redknapp went a limb ahead and rated Odegaard as the best midfielder in the Premier League, which is obviously a pretty hot take considering the fact that PL also is home to other top midfielders like Kevin de Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Casemiro… just to name a few. But Redknapp remained firm and justified his shoutout.

“Right now he’s number one. There’s nobody [better],’ said the pundit on Sky Sports. Normally we would say Kevin De Bruyne is the best midfield player, not just in the Premier League but the world. But something isn’t quite right. He isn’t playing as many games as he’d like. But Odegaard does this thing where – all great players possess it – it’s like time stands still when he has the ball,” Redknapp said.

The Norwegian footballer scored the third of Arsenal’s three first-half goals at Craven Cottage on Sunday as the Gunners restored their five-point lead at the top of the table courtesy of a 3-0 win over Fulham.

Gabriel Magalhaes scored the first goal for Arteta’s team before Gabriel Martinelli added a second, with Odegaard putting the game to bed on the stroke of half-time with a typically calm finish, collecting Leandro Trossard’s cross and firing into the far corner on his cultured left foot.

The 24-year-old now has 10 goals and six assists this season in the league and Redknapp feels he has taken over the mantle of being the Premier League’s best creator from De Bruyne.

Arsenal’s fight for their first Premier League title is in good shape in 2022-23 after a few very narrow wins in recent matches against Bournemouth and Leicester City. They produced a resounding performance against Fulham and continued exerting pressure on Manchester City. Find more Football news and betting odds in Nextbet.
