Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has managed to avoid a touchline ban after he was given a red card during his club’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City. Liverpool became the first and only team this season to defeat Pep Guardiola’s side, but after one of the referee’s decisions didn’t go his way, Klopp went berserk on the touchline, earning him a straight red.
The manager’s actions were investigated further by the Football Association (FA) and the decision was made to fine the German and there was no necessity found to ban him from the touchline. He was fined 30,000 pounds by the FA and is expected to return to the sideline soon.
Klopp had been charged with a breach of FA rule E3, which covers “comments which are improper, which bring the game into disrepute, which are threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting”.
The FA said he accepted that his behavior “was improper”, and “an independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanction during a hearing”. Klopp too had agreed to his mistake and said that he deserved a red card for the comments he had made in the spur of the moment.
Klopp was upset by the referee Anthony Taylor when a foul on Mohamed Salah was not given with four minutes of normal time remaining. This happened 10 minutes after Salah danced past Joao Cancelo to score the only goal in the game. After the match, Klopp mentioned that he made no disrespectful comment and was well aware of the consequences.
Liverpool was without him on the sideline when they traveled to Nottingham for their clash against Steve Cooper’s Forest. In one of the most surprising results of the season, the 20th-placed unit got the better of Liverpool with a 1-0 victory. Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal as Forest picked up their first win of the campaign.
Liverpool’s shaky little start in the Premier League has not reflected in their European ambitions. Despite picking up just 16 points in 11 games, the club is through to the round of 16 in the Champions League after winning four of their five games.
Before heading to the international break for the FIFA World Cup 2022, Liverpool will host Leeds United, Southampton in the Premier League, and Napoli in the Champions League. They also have a tricky away fixture against Tottenham.
