LIV Golf Announces Groundbreaking Player Trades for 2024 Season

9 November, 2023

In a remarkable development, LIV Golf, the Saudi Arabia-backed golf circuit, has unveiled an exciting plan for the 2024 season. The league, which consists of 12 teams, is set to introduce a transfer window, allowing player trades, making it a significant first in the world of golf.

During the off-season, teams within the league will have the opportunity to trade players from their existing rosters, provided that both teams involved give their approval. Furthermore, there will be a mid-season trading window, adding an intriguing twist to the sport. Follow your favourite sport with attractive betting odds from Nextbet.

A statement from LIV Golf stated, “The league has launched the sport’s first-ever transfer window with player movement, free agency, and new team rosters in progress as momentum builds for LIV Golf’s second full season, teeing off in 2024.”

For players eyeing a chance in the 2024 LIV Golf League, finishing in the Top 24 Lock Zone of the Individual Standings at the end of the regular season is a crucial goal. This ensures them a spot in the upcoming season.

The player movement process unfolds in two phases. In Phase One, players who are in the Top 24 and have contracts expiring at the end of 2023 will receive a minimum one-year contract extension offer from their current teams. Those who decline this offer will transition into free agents, free to explore new opportunities.

Phase Two marks the beginning of free agency, where players who finished between 25th and 44th in the standings become free agents. Teams are not obligated to re-sign these free agents but can instead open a spot for new signings.

This open spot provides teams with various options, such as signing a Top 24 player who has opted for free agency, recruiting a player from the open zone, agreeing to trade players with other teams, or even signing an external player not associated with any 2023 team roster.

This exciting development comes on the heels of a merger announced in June, involving the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf. LIV Golf boasts a player roster that includes major champions such as Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Cameron Smith.

It’s important to note that in October, LIV Golf’s bid to have its players earn ranking points was unanimously rejected by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). The decision was based on concerns about the format of the Saudi Arabia-backed circuit, which has continued to generate significant attention and discussion within the world of professional golf.
