Manchester City lining up a surprise swoop for a Real Madrid midfielder

10 October, 2022

Manchester City is lining up a surprise transfer business with Real Madrid, which would see club legend Luka Modric head to England. Modric’s contract runs out in the summer of 2023 and as it stands, there have been very few indications coming from the Galacticos regarding a contract extension.

Modric’s agents had triggered the additional year extension this summer, which kept him at the club this season. However, in a very surprising report coming from El Nacional, it was claimed that the defending champions in England are monitoring his situation. The Croatian will be free to negotiate with other clubs starting this January.

The 37-year-old has submitted a proposal from the Manchester club and they are awaiting a response from him during the winter transfer window. The former Ballon d’Or winner continues to impress despite being closer to his 40s, contributing three goals (two scored, one assisted) since the beginning of this season.

Since joining Real Madrid in 2012, Modric has made 445 appearances for the club, scoring 33 times and assisting 73 times. He was a pivotal presence in the midfield which won the Champions League five times since 2014, including a sensational three-on-the-trot from 2016 to 2018.

Real Madrid is going neck-to-neck with arch-rivals Barcelona in the title chase and will once again enter the Champions League as favorites. With plenty of rumors already suggesting that this could be Luka Modric’s final season with the club, he will be keen on finishing his spell with the Galacticos with at least one more major honor.

Manchester City is enjoying a sensational time in the Premier League, with their new signing Erling Haaland scoring goals for fun. The Champions League title remains the only title to elude the Citizens since the Saudi takeover a decade ago but Pep Guardiola seems ever-so adamant to add that silverware to the cabinet.

Although scoring goals has not been the biggest of problems for Guardiola’s side, City’s scouts are always on the move to ensure their bench is stocked with star presence in all areas. It is believed that the Spanish coach wants Modric’s experience in the lineup, which could help them scale greater heights.
