Manchester United is reportedly considering the possibility of promoting goalkeeper Matej Kovar to their first-team squad for the upcoming season. According to a report by 90Min.com, the club has been closely monitoring Kovar’s progress in recent months.

Kovar is 22-years-old and currently on loan with Czech Republic side Sparta Prague. The young goalkeeper joined Manchester United in January 2018 from FC Slovacko and was subsequently enrolled in their academy.

During his loan spell with Sparta Prague, Kovar has played in 23 league matches this season and kept eight clean sheets. In the past, he has been loaned out to Swindon Town and Burton Albion, where he gained valuable experience.

If Kovar is promoted to the senior team for the 2023/24 campaign, it will undoubtedly be a big step up for him. He may be given opportunities to play in cup matches to gain more experience at Old Trafford. However, given his age and relative lack of experience, it is unlikely that he will receive consistent first-team appearances at the moment.

Manchester United has a history of fielding talented goalkeepers, including Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar, and David de Gea. Whether Kovar can achieve the same status remains to be seen.

If Kovar does join the first team, he will be competing against David de Gea, Dean Henderson, and Lee Grant for the goalkeeper position. David de Gea has been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for several seasons, but with his form declining in recent years, the club may be looking for a younger replacement.
