McLaren Unveils Nostalgic Chrome Livery in Partnership with Google for British Grand Prix Celebration

4 July, 2023

McLaren, in a bid to celebrate its historic Triple Crown triumphs, recently showcased a trio of homage liveries during the Indianapolis 500. This remarkable achievement was consolidated into a unified design, which adorned the cars of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the Monaco and Spain races.

Building on the momentum of this celebratory campaign, McLaren has now unveiled a revival of its revered ‘fan-favourite’ chrome livery that graced their cars from 2006 to 2014. Notably, this distinctive design was prominently featured by Lewis Hamilton in 2008, a defining year when he clinched his maiden Formula 1 World Championship title. The reincarnated chrome livery is a collaborative effort with McLaren’s partner, Google, who incidentally introduced their Chrome web browser in the same year as Hamilton’s historic achievement.

Acknowledging the popular demand for the classic chrome look, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown stated, “It’s no secret that racing fans love McLaren’s classic chrome livery. Google Chrome aimed to bring back elements of this iconic livery to commemorate our team’s history at the British Grand Prix, and we are thrilled to fulfill the desires of our loyal supporters. I am confident that this livery will evoke fond memories for many fans, and I am eagerly anticipating its appearance on the track during our home race.”

To complement the ‘Chrome’ aesthetic, bespoke helmet designs, boots, and race suits will be customized for both Norris and Piastri, accentuating the overall visual impact of the team.

Brown playfully mentioned that Norris had persistently lobbied for a return to the chrome livery, prompting a humorous response from the young driver. Norris recollected, “I think it was one of the first things I said to him. If I recall correctly, it was when he first presented me with the livery we were going to use in 2019.”

He continued, “He asked me, ‘Hey dude, what would you change about the car?’ and I replied, ‘The whole thing.’ As much as I adore a white and bright orange car— that livery was amazing— there’s simply nothing like the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes that we had back then. That’s what I grew up watching. It was that livery that truly captured my heart and propelled me towards becoming a Formula 1 driver.”

Norris nostalgically added, “It served as my inspiration. Before that, I was more into MotoGP and motorcycles. I didn’t know much about racing until I started watching Formula 1, witnessing the thrilling battles between Lewis [Hamilton] and Fernando [Alonso], even though they were teammates. That’s when I fell in love with the sport.”

He concluded with a hint of enthusiasm, “Every year, I’ve been bugging Zak to revisit that direction to some extent. I understand it’s only for one race, but it’s fantastic to relive some of the essence that initially captivated me about Formula 1.” Get the latest updates from the world of sports only on Nextbet Sports.
