Mick Schumacher lost his seat at Haas to Nico Hulkenberg but will now join Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2023 Formula 1 season.

The seat at Mercedes opened up after Nyck de Vries joined AlphaTauri. Mick, the son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, will now be a backup for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell at Mercedes.

Daniel Riccardo, who joined as the third driver for Red Bull recently, was linked with the job for a long time but his association with Red Bull paved the way for the 23-year-old to join Mercedes. His father also spent his final three seasons at F1 as a driver for Mercedes. 

Mercedes announced just hours after Ferrari confirmed that they had parted ways with Schumacher. Mick was a part of their driver academy previously and had also impressed through the ranks into F1.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said Schumacher has it in him to be ready to step into the car on short notice if the need arises.

“Mick is a talented young driver and we’re delighted to have him join the team,” Wolff said.

“He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach, and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities, and we’re excited for him to help us develop the W14.

“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula 1 under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise. “

Schumacher also expressed his happiness in joining the Mercedes team.

“I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes team and I am committed to giving it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment,” said Schumacher.

“I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me,” he added.
