Newcastle United in contention to sign Manchester United midfielder
Newcastle United have been spending a lot of money since the Saudi PIF took over the club back in October 2021. However, they have been very strategic with their spending and did not let their emotions get the better of their judgements. As a result, in their first full season as owners, they are already in contention for a Champions League spot.
Eddie Howe has assembled a very power-packed squad that is capable of putting to sword some of the best teams in England. The journey has only begun for the Magpies, who still have a long way to go before becoming anything significant at this level of the competition. They have shown great signs of progress and are more than capable of tearing it up and down.
In that pursuit of making their squad further strong, Newcastle United are currently eying to sign Manchester United’s out-of-favor midfielder Scott McTominay. McTominay, who was a regular starter under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has fallen out of contention under Erik Ten Hag this season with the emergence of Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and most recently, Marcel Sabitzer.
McTominay got off to a solid start under Ten Hag and even started plenty of big games ahead of their big money summer signing Casemiro. But once the Brazilian got hold of the conditions and started kicking into this team, McTominay was nowhere in contention for a starting position and the Scottish player is seemingly frustrated with that stance.
Re-emphasising on his intention to look beyond McTominay, Ten Hag has preferred to give starting positions to Fred and Sabitzer more often than him, which clearly indicates that his role will be restricted if he remains at the club. The 26-year-old wants more game time and in that pursuit, is showing interest towards an exit.
Eddie Howe has built his team around physicality and McTominay might fit right into that midfield as an upgrade for Sean Longstaff. With the presence of Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock, he could form a lethal trio. However, it’ll be interesting to see how much United might quote for their man.
