North London rivals enter transfer battle for Dortmund star
It has been a year of opposite halves for the North London Clubs. While Arsenal are mounting their strongest title challenge in 20 years under Mikel Arteta, Tottenham continue to huff and puff under Antonio Conte. While it is clear that both sides will require some more heavy backing in the upcoming summer to really make them strong, Arsenal currently are riding the momentum.
Both these rival clubs are now set to fight it out for Borussia Dortmund’s attacking midfielder Julian Brandt. The German international is likely to exit the club at the end of this season and Premier League clubs, especially Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, are in the running to get his signature. As it stands, there are multiple other big clubs in Europe scouting him.
While the Gunners boast an impressive attacking squad, including Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, manager Mikel Arteta might feel the need to improve the squad depth given that they will almost certainly be playing in the Champions League next season for the first time in six years.
As for Tottenham, their recent signings have not fired in as many goals as Conte would’ve liked. While Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison have provided the odd reprise moment, the team still continues to depend on their magical duo of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min. In fact, the South Korean’s form has plundered this season too, leaving it all to Kane.
Brandt has been in Bundesliga for a better part of his professional career, representing Bayer Lerkusen in his early years before making a move to the Westfalenstadion. In 283 Bundesliga games for the two clubs, the attacking midfielder, who is also more than capable of playing on the wings, has scored 57 goals and recorded 62 assists. This season the German footballer has been in terrific form and has scored nine goals, to go with five assists in 31 matches across all competitions to help his side go level on points with Bayern Munich at the top of the league table. Dortmund are aiming their first league title since 2011-12 and it seems like Brandt’s value might go higher up if they do get there.
