Premier League 2022-23: Southampton hold Manchester United to a frustrating draw
This was a game that had it all, but Manchester United will be utterly disappointed by the fact that all they could gather was a single point against relegation-threatened Southampton at the Old Trafford. The side had a few good opportunities despite being reduced to 10-man, but it was a day of disappointment eventually for the Red Devils.
Manchester United did not get off to a front-foot start in the game and Southampton did a decent job in moving the ball early on. David de Gea made a stunning save to deny Theo Walcott a pretty good opportunity from close range. Despite that, the Old Trafford crowd hoping for some improvement as United have a tendency of not hitting rhythm soon.
However, things spiralled quite badly for the side when their midfield stalwart Casemiro lunged in on a tackle which put them under immense trouble. Post a VAR check, the Brazilian midfielder was sent off, for the second time in a span of month in the Premier League.
Manchester United despite that had the first big chance post the red card. Bruno Fernandes beautifully whipped a freekick into the path of Raphael Varane, who got good contact on his shot but was denied heroically by the keeper. That was pretty much the only time the Red Devils made themselves big in front of the goal in the first 45.
Southampton gained control in the second half and created some good chances. A fantastic goal-line clearance from Aaron Wan-Bissaka denied the Saints from going up once and next up, it was the cross-bar denying James Ward-Prowse from a freekick zone. Bruno Fernandes for United and Kyle Walker-Pieters for Southampton hit the cross bar as well in the next few minutes, but couldn’t find the net. Ultimately, both sides had to settle for a stalemate despite having plenty of presentable opportunities. Southampton will be kicking themselves for missing out on a golden opportunity to snatch points at Old Trafford. For Erik Ten Hag, he dropped points in two consecutive PL games for the first time post the World Cup.
