Southampton sack manager Nathan Jones after just three months in charge
Nathan Jones lasted barely 14 matches in charge as Southampton decided to part ways with the Englishman just three months into his managerial tenure with the Premier League club. Jones had replaced former Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl in November, just before the league broke for the FIFA World Cup. For more sources about Football and betting news visit Nextbet.
Since then, he was able to lead the side to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup as well as making it to the fifth round of the FA Cup. However, their fate in the Premier League has been more unfortunate.
Southampton have lost seven of the eight matches Jones has managed in the English top flight and their form in the league was one of the primary reasons why Southampton decided to pull the trigger. In fact, their only win under Jones in the Premier League arrived against fellow struggling outfit Everton in January.
“Southampton Football Club can confirm it has parted company with men’s first team manager Nathan Jones. First team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club,” the club said in a statement.
The decision arrives after Southampton lost their most recent league match 2-1 to Wolves on Saturday. They were left undone by a sensational second-half comeback from 10-man Wolves at a hostile St Mary’s, with Joao Gomes scoring a late decider to pile more pressure on Jones.
Jones was left visibly frustrated by the performance and dismayed at the result. In fact, he immediately made his way down the tunnel after the referee blew the full-time whistle. In the post-match media interaction, he had mentioned the way Wolves crawled their way back into the game as a ‘sucker punch’ to deal with.
The result at the Molineux Stadium leaves the Saints on 15 points after 22 matches. They are at the bottom of the Premier League and are four points from safety. His sacking was not surprising given that it was due to the fact that he failed to get the desired results on the pitch and also failed to win over supporters at the Saint Mary’s Stadium.
Also departing with Jones as the supporting staff of the first team head coach are Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan. First-team lead Coach Ruben Selles will take charge of training and prepare the team ahead of next weekend’s game against Chelsea.
