2015/16 Premier League champions Leicester City have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers after a thoroughly fruitless season thus far. The club are now battling relegation, firmly in the drop zone and a couple of points from safety. 

The Foxes have looked extremely different from the teams in bygone years that has tasted so much success within their limited means. Their defence has been a let down following the departures of centre half Wesley Fofana and veteran Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel, who joined Nice over the summer transfer window. 

Their attack has also not been as potent as it was in previous years, mostly due to the lack of goalscoring threat that would have otherwise been provided by the waning Jamie Vardy. Patson Daka has been inefficient in front of goal, and while Kelechi Iheanacho passes the eye test on most occasions, has just been unable to find the back of the net. 

Reports had suggested that Rodgers had fallen out with several members of the squad since long, and was on the verge of getting the sack for some time. His side’s performances have not helped him in that regard, as the Foxes have been vastly inconsistent, and indecisive in critical situations. This season’s performances reflect in their statistics, with the Foxes losing 17 of their 18 Premier League games.

While there have been instances where Rodgers’ men have done well, such moments have been few and far between, leading the ownership but with no choice.

The chairman of the board was respectful of Rodgers, acknowledging his contributions to the club, including two consecutive fifth-place finishes in the English top flight. 

“The achievements of the team under Brendan’s management speak for themselves – we’ve experienced some of our finest footballing moments under his guidance and will always be grateful to him and his staff for the heights they helped us to reach on the pitch. However, performances and results during the current season have been below our shared expectations. It had been our belief that continuity and stability would be key to correcting our course, particularly given our previous achievements under Brendan’s management.” Chairman Srivaddhanaprabha said.
