Despite their quarterfinal exit in the FIFA World Cup 2022, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed that Gareth Southgate will continue to stay as the manager of the England men’s national football team. He will be in charge until UEFA Euro 2024, which will take place in Germany. 

England’s World Cup run in Qatar ended with France defeating them in the quarter-finals 2-1. Harry Kane, scored the first equalizer in the match to level up with Wayne Rooney England’s leading goal-scorer, who missed another penalty as Didier Deschamps’ team went on to win the match quite nerve-wracklingly. 

However, their campaign until then had multiple positives, and was the team with the most goals at the time they got knocked out. They scored 12 goals across three games before the quarterfinal, including a 6-2 thrashing of Iran. Southgate’s team had their moments of glitz and glory in the World Cup this year, but it wasn’t meant to be.

A couple of days after the game it was reported that FA wanted him to continue but Southgate had some reservations. However, the 52-year-old finally decided to sign the extension. 

A statement from FA CEO Mark Bullingham read: “We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and (assistant) Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.”

There is plenty more to Gareth Southgate’s credentials that have helped him regain his position. Experts say that he is one of the first English managers in many decades who successfully wiped off club rivalries within the national camp and created a team that works in harmony. This also led to some impressive campaigns, but no silverware yet.

It all started when England reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and narrowly lost out to Croatia in extra time. They had another memorable outing soon in Euro 2020 where they reached the final but fell short on penalties against Italy. It seems like the manager has the trust of his players and all the fans, which is going to keep him active until Euro 2024, possibly even the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
