The reigning Asian youth champion Ravina was the star of the show and displayed her immense skills and talents once again as she emerged victorious in her finals bout. Ravina bagged gold in her event, to take India’s medals tally to 11 at the IBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 in La Nucia, Spain.

Ravina was in the 63 kg bout of the competition. She was involved in the final against Megan deCler of the Netherlands. Ravina did not get off to the best of starts but she bounced back strongly. The Indian pugilist displayed immense technical ability and plenty of fitness combined with a quick movement to mount a strong comeback against her Dutch rival.

In the end, the reigning Asian youth champion, who won the gold medal in 2022, reigned supreme and won the fiercely contested bout 4-3 by split decision after the bout was reviewed.

Another Indian pugilist was involved in the final as Kirti took on 2022 European Youth Champion Cliona Elizabeth D’Arcy of Ireland in the over 81 kg category. However, Kirti went down fighting and had to settle for silver after suffering a 5-0 loss.

India had a strong showing at the recently concluded Youth World Boxing Championships. Possessing a contingent of 25 pugilists at the event, Indians collected a total of 11 medals in Spain, including a tally of four gold medals, three silver, and four bronze medals.

In total, 17 Indians had qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament which was more than any other country at the 2022 edition of the match.

India’s female boxers were also consistent and their total tally of eight medals in the competition was also greater than any other country involved in this year’s championships. They were followed by Kazakhstan (5) and Uzbekistan (4).

Ravina (63kg), Devika Ghorpade (52kg) clinched the gold, Kirti (+81kg), Bhawna Sharma (48kg) won silver while Muskan (75kg), Lashu Yadav (70kg), Kunjarani Devi Thongam (60kg) and Tamanna (50kg) claimed the bronze medal.

The men’s categories were led by Youth Asian champions Vanshaj (63.5kg) and Vishwanath Suresh (48kg) who bagged the top prize. Meanwhile, Ashish attained the silver medal in the 54 kg category.

Nearly 600 boxers from 73 countries took part in this year’s edition of the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in La Nucia, Spain.
