LIV Golf: Controversy Surrounds Impact on World Golf Rankings as Bryson DeChambeau Speaks Out
LIV Golf is a new professional golf league backed by Saudi Arabia that is making waves in the golfing world. However, its progress has not been without controversy, particularly with regards to its impact on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Currently, LIV Golf events do not award OWGR points, which has led to questions about the accuracy of the rankings. Talor Gooch, who won the LIV Golf’s Adelaide event, even slipped two spots in the OWGR rankings.
Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open champion, has been particularly vocal about the issue. He believes that the current rankings are obsolete because they do not take into account the performance of LIV Golf professionals in their events. Speaking at a pre-event press conference for the Singapore event, DeChambeau said that the rankings would soon go out of business if they did not become more accurate.
“It’s pretty much almost obsolete as of right now,” he was quoted as saying via france24. DeChambeau has also filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, which he mentioned during the interview, citing his limitations in speaking on the matter due to the suit.
Despite the controversy surrounding the rankings, LIV Golf continues to attract top golfers to its events. The fifth event on the league’s 2023 schedule is set to take place from April 28 to April 30 at The Sentosa Golf Club on Sentosa Island, Singapore.
The competition will consist of 54 holes, without any elimination rounds, and will offer a total prize amount of $25 million. Of this sum, $20 million will be allotted for the individual section, while the remaining $5 million will be designated for the team section.
While the debate about the accuracy of the OWGR rankings continues, LIV Golf is pushing forward with its ambitious plans to revolutionize professional golf. Whether or not it will succeed in doing so remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that it is shaking up the golfing world in a big way. Explore fresh Golf news by visiting Nextbet.
