WBA light heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol in Quest for Next Opponent
Dmitry Bivol, the WBA light heavyweight champion, is on the hunt for his next opponent, and manager Vadim Kornilov is facing a challenging task to secure a match for the fighter’s upcoming bout.
Bivol has been out of action since November 2022 when he convincingly defeated mandatory challenger Gilberto Ramirez in a twelve-round bout, securing a unanimous decision victory.
Initially, there were talks of a rematch with Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, whom Bivol defeated in May of the previous year. However, negotiations hit roadblocks, including disagreements over financial terms and the contract weight. Canelo eventually opted for a multi-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions, taking a different path. Follow your favourite boxer with attractive betting odds from Nextbet.
Now, Bivol is eager to step back into the ring in the coming months, but finding the right opponent has proven to be a complex task. Vadim Kornilov shared insights into their efforts and aspirations.
“Our priority is to make Dmitry’s return to the ring happen in October or November. Although there is no confirmed date yet, several factors have contributed to this uncertainty. We face challenges, including the desire of our team, and some external circumstances,” Kornilov explained during an interview with Ivan Orekhov.
Securing a suitable opponent has been the primary hurdle. Kornilov elaborated, “We are actively exploring various options, searching for a fighter who not only desires to step into the ring but is also someone the fans are eager to watch in the arena and on TV.”
A few possibilities emerged, such as Dan Azeez and Joshua Buatsi. However, both fighters declined, choosing to face each other instead. Additionally, the prospect of a bout with Jaime Mungia remains on the table for consideration in the future.
“We continue our search and are in the process of negotiations to ensure Dmitry’s swift return to the ring. Currently, he is in an intermediate training camp, preparing for the main camp leading up to the fight,” Kornilov concluded, emphasizing their determination to see Bivol back in action as soon as possible.
